Unit: Pop Art Movement Project: Foam board Printmaking
Featured Artist: Andy Warhol
Objectives:
1. Identify different kinds of lines in prints.
2. Use line to create an edition of prints.
3. Recognize line in prints of artists and students.
4. Evaluate the use of line in artist and student work.
Motivation:
1. Show and discuss examples of prints from Warhol that use line and shape.
2. Demonstrate all steps of printing procedure before students begin to draw.
3. Show students that the finished print is a mirror image of the plate, and so any
words must be drawn in reverse on the plate.
4. Demonstrate numbering, signing, and titling an edition
Instructions: 1. Draw any kind of head (cartoon or realistic) in the style of Andy Warhol’s self-portrait on the 5”x8” paper and use only lines. Lines may be straight, curved, zigzag, expressive, or create pattern or texture, but should not be too close together or detailed. No shading should be attempted, as areas done this way will fill in with ink and ruin the print.
2. Tape the line drawing on the paper to the front of the foam board with tape. Trace over the pencil lines pressing down a little harder than normal. The pencil should sink into the foam and may tear the paper. This will transfer the image to the foamboard.
3. Remove the paper and trace again over the lines on the foamboard with a dull pencil. The lines need to be fairly deep and even in the foamboard to print well, but care should be taken not to cut through it with the pencil.
4. Place foamboard on a table covered with newspaper next to the printing tray. Squeeze ink on printing tray and roll brayer in ink to coat evenly. Make sure not to add to much ink on the tray because too much will go into the line on the foam board. Also make sure that you lift the brayer up then roll it into the ink then lift up again so that you get an even coat of ink on the brayer. Going back and forth which most students want to do will create an uneven distribution of ink.
5. Use ink-covered brayer to coat foamboard evenly. Roll in several directions and pay particular attention to edges of plate.
6. Place plate on clean section of covered newspaper table. Press 8”x16” printing paper right side down over plate close to one edge of the paper and rub evenly with rubbing spoons.
7. Carefully pull off print; then place paper back at their seat and then they can wash off their foam print plate in
water. Repeat process three times with different colors to complete the project.
8. Number and sign when dry. Since the students will be making three prints they will number their first print 1/3, their second print 2/3, and their third print 3/3. They will put the numbers anywhere on the bottom of each of their prints.
Evaluation:
1. Use line to create a design or image in the print?
2. Use correct techniques to produce clean borders and crisp-edged lines?
3. Number, title, and sign edition?
4. Evaluate completed work?
