Lesson 1 | Lesson 2 | Lesson 3

Unit:
Post-Impressionism

Project:
van Gogh Drawings

Featured Artist:
Vincent van Gogh

Objectives:
1. Recognize and describe the style of Vincent van Gogh.
2. Practice van Gogh’s short stroke technique.
3. Recreate one of van Gogh’s paintings or incorporate his
technique into a personal design.

Materials Provided:
• Black Construction Paper
• Construction Paper Crayons
• Sample Black and White van Gogh Paintings

Materials Needed:

Vocabulary:
1. Brush stroke: individual visible lines in a painting created by a paintbrush or other painting tool.
2. Color theory: practical guidance to color mixing and the visual impact of specific color combinations.

Motivation:
1. Show and discuss examples of paintings from Vincent van Gogh that use short stroke and color blending.
2. Explain the short strokes van Gogh used to create thick texture and form that was incorporated into each painting.

Instructions:
post11. Begin practicing van Gogh’s technique by creating a few shapes on black construction paper using the construction crayons. Choose two colors that may be similar such as light and dark green. Use short vertical strokes to create grass using the first color. Using the second color begin filling in between each of the lines with more short vertical strokes until area is filled with the alternating colors.

post2post3 2. Try creating a starburst. Choose two similar colors such as a pink and orange. Begin with a small dot of the first color then apply short strokes around the dot using the second color. Fill in the spaces between the lines using the first color making the same short strokes. Continue alternating colors until the starburst is large and full of color.

post5 post43. Create a long wavy line by choosing two similar colors such as yellow and white. Using short dashes, create one long wavy line. Around both sides use the second color to create them same shape of lines. Use the first color again to surround the lines from the second color, continue until the shape is wide and full of blending colors.

post6post74. Practice making a spiraling circle. Choose two similar colors and being using the first color to make short dashes in the center of your space. Use more short strokes to wrap around the center dash and continue making dashes moving around the circle until it is full with about 4 or 5 layers. Use the second color to make short dashes that go between the lines of the first color making the circle appear fuller and blended with the colors.

post7 5. Once you have practice a few shapes choose one the black and white van Gogh drawing you would like to recreate. Using this picture as a guide and the techniques just practiced, copy this picture onto your black construction paper and add bursts of color similarly done creating the practice shapes.

postfinalpost 6. You may also create you own picture using the practiced techniques with line and shape.

Evaluation:
1. Use short strokes and lines to create a design in the image?
2. Use correct techniques to produce good use of color?
3. Evaluate completed work?
