Lesson 1 | Lesson 2 | Lesson 3

Unit:
Prehistoric Art

Project: Cave Painting

Featured Artist: N/A

Objectives:
1. Identify the Lascaux Cave Drawings.
2. Use line to create drawings of prehistoric animals.
3. Recognize animals in students’ drawing.
4. Evaluate the use of line in artist and student work.

Materials Provided:
• Earth Tone Pastels
• 9”x 18” white paper
• Worksheets
• Fixative

Materials Needed:
• Paper towels
• Newspaper to cover the table

Vocabulary:
1. Lascaux Cave: complex of caves in southwestern France famous for its cave paintings
2. Composition: the placement or arrangement of the elements of art in a work
3. Pastel: an art medium in the form of a stick, consisting of pure powdered pigment and a binder
4. Binder: element used in pastels to aid in keeping the powder pigment compact.

Motivation:
1. Show and discuss examples of Lascaux Cave drawings.
2. Demonstrate all steps of procedure before students begin to draw.
3. Show students that the finished product while demonstrating using the whole composition.

Instructions:
cave1cave21. Crumble 9”x18” paper into a ball, then carefully smooth out the wrinkled paper flat onto the table making sure no corners are still folded.

2.Choose two light colors (such as yellow and light orange) to cover the white paper from end to end using only the sides of the pastels (not the tip). Use one color to cover the paper fully then move on to the next color and repeat. Using the side of the pastels will allow you to cover a large amount of surface area while using light pressure so an image can be placed on top of the two colors.

cave4cave53. Use fingers or a paper towel to smooth around the two colors on the page making sure the whole page is filled with the blended colors.

cave6 4. Choose two to three darker colors (the darker the better to set apart from the light colors of the background). Use the whole composition to draw figures of animals. These animals should be what type of animals you thought may have lived many years ago during the time when people were creating cave drawings. Use your imagination!

Evaluation:
1. Use line to create prehistoric animals?
2. Use correct techniques to crumble paper into a ball and carefully unfold and smooth?
3. Use two lighter colors and the sides of the pastels for mixing the background?
4. Use two to three darker colors to draw the animals?
5. Evaluate completed work?
