Objectives:
1. Recognize and discuss Chagall’s works.
2. Use color and objects to communicate ideas through art.
3. Create surreal drawing reflecting student and his or her surroundings.
Materials Provided:
• Paper, 9”x12”
• Two Head Outlines
• Crayons or Markers
Materials Needed:
• Pencil
Vocabulary:
1. Contrast: the difference in color and light between parts of an image.
2. Form: the shape, appearance, or configuration, of an object
3. Surrealism: works that feature the element of surprise and unexpected juxtapositions
Motivation:
1. Show and discuss Chagall’s work with the idea of Surrealism and his use of intense colors.
2. Demonstrate all steps of procedure before students begin.
3. Show students the finished product.
Instructions: 1. Take one piece of 9”x12” piece of paper and turn it vertical (long ways) and place the two faces of opposite sides of the paper facing towards each other. Trace the two faces with a pencil.
2. Draw a house at the bottom of the page. Then turn the paper on its side and draw yourself holding something that you like or that is your favorite activity (a baseball, skateboard or paintbrush).
3. Turn the paper again and draw a landscape opposite of the house. This can be any type of outdoor scenery such as a forest or a couple trees, flowers or a desert.
4. Turn the
paper to the last blank side and choose the time
of day by drawing
either a sun
or moon in
the sky. Make
sure to draw a
face on the
sun or moon.
5. Add color to each
of the elements that
were drawn (the
house, yourself, the
landscape and sun or
moon). Also add color
to the two faces on the
sides of the paper. Try
to use intense color
just as Chagall did in his work.
6. Finish coloring the rest of the paper incorporating color into the scenes, objects and
faces.
Evaluation:
1. Use line and color to create a design or image in the drawing?
2. Use correct techniques to produce clean borders and Surrealism design?
3. Evaluate completed work?
