Summer Day Camps: Nature
Nature day camp provides exciting hands-on activities such as crafts, games, projects, and songs that allow each child to explore the wonders of nature through a multidisciplinary curriculum.

A trained adult staff of professional educators with extensive experience working with children and teaching about nature lead all camp activities. Staff members are trained in First Aid and CPR. Lifeguards are on duty for all swimming activities.

Pre and post care is available for Nature Day Camps for an additional fee. Pre-care begins at 8am and post-care is offered until 5:30pm. Please inquire upon registering.

Budding Naturalists – Ages 4 - Entering Kindergarten
A Bug Huntin’ We Will Go June 7 - 11 $50/$40 OI members 8:30 -

Hunt for nature’s recyclers (decomposer bugs) as you explore leaf litter and dead logs on the trail. Make a worm whistle, bug traps and capture a spider web!
Miss Bee-haven is FUN June 14 - 18 $50/$40 OI members 8:30 -

Explore the butterfly garden in search of pollinators. Capture a caterpillar, net a butterfly and drink nectar. Become a bee for a day and learn why pollinating creatures are so important to us.

Think you have what it takes to be a superhero? Compare your senses to the “super senses” found in nature. Test your super powers on our superhero obstacle course.

Find out how scientists group each “family” as you explore the adaptations of reptiles, amphibians and birds. Be a mommy or daddy bird as you tend to eggs in our incubator and feed the hatchlings.

Hike down to the stream and net damsel and dragonfly nymphs. Learn about the role water plays in nature’s greatest mystery, metamorphosis. Can you capture a tadpole? How about a frog?
Barefoot Bear Foot July 19 - 23 $50/$40 OI members 8:30 -

Compare your foot to a bear foot, as you create a field guide of animal tracks throughout the week. Use your guide to find tracks on the trails of the Oglebay Park followed by a teddy bear picnic.

Who is awake when you are asleep? Learn how our nighttime (nocturnal) friends “see” and “hear” with super senses. Test your hearing against that of a bat in our “echo chamber.”

Test your eyes and see if you can find animals in disguise. Explore how animals use color and behavior to “tell” other animals to “beware.” Play camouflage games in the woods.

Is it art or is it a building? Investigate the wonders animals make to survive as you try to answer this question. Build and make natural wonders using nature’s own supplies as a palette.
Nature Investigators – Entering 1st Grade - Entering 3rd Grade
A Playful Nature June 7 - 11 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Play games that explore ecological concepts such as the interrelationships between living things, habitat and camouflage. Discover what kinds of work and play animals participate in.
Why Be Green? June 14 - 18 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Why are plants, and even some animals, green? Conduct daily experiments to find out why “green” works and learn the benefits of living in harmony with nature.
Like Night and Day June 21 - 25 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Celebrate the Summer Solstice on June 21. Capture images of animals active during the day and set up traps for some that come out at night. Compare nighttime (nocturnal) creatures with daytime (diurnal) ones and explore light and dark with games and experiments.
Something Fishy June 28 - July 2 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Catch some fish and delve into their underwater world. Shake hands with their neighbors and learn the various jobs they do. Paint your own ceramic fish for firing and take it home the next day.
Slime and Scales July 12 - 16 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Get hands on with reptiles and amphibians at the Schrader Center and discover the similarities and differences used to classify them.
Spineless Critters July 19 - 23 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Investigate all things arthropod as you collect specimens in the fields, forests and streams of Oglebay. Catch some insects on video and observe how they live. Visit the forests of Camp Giscowheco.
Let’s Rock! July 26 - 30 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Hunt for rocks and learn to identify them. Touch plants and animals that have turned to stone. See tools and weapons from the Stone Age and learn how they were made and used.
Survival Fun Aug. 2 - 6 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Experience living in the outdoors. Set up camp for a day and cook lunch over a fire. Compete in games designed to teach qualities and skills needed in the wilderness.
Sky High Aug. 9 - 13 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Cloud your vision with the world above us and the things that occur there. Become wise about weather and see how nature makes its own predictions. Observe and capture animals that frequent the air and find out the bio-physics that enables them to get there.
Nature Explorers – Entering 4th Grade - Entering 6th Grade
Cloudy With a Chance Of… June 7 - 11 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Investigate the importance of weather on our ecosystems. Build a solar oven and design a kite. Record the weather and compare it globally and historically.
Earth Keepers June 14 - 18 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Learn to lessen your impact on our environment and measure your footprint. Investigate the three Rs and how to use them at home. Create your own city to examine impacts on the environment.
Survivor June 21 - 25 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Discover the skills required to be efficient in the outdoors. Learn to use a compass, track an animal, make fire and filter water. Make your own series of animal tracks and an outdoor shelter.
Litter Life June 28 - July 2 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Search through leaf litter and discover the world inside. Investigate what makes up soil, discover what a decomposer is and what makes them important.
Wet n’ Wild July 12 - 16 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm The most popular week of the summer! Play water games and become an expert in stream science. Explore the importance of conservation methods for one of our most precious resources.
Buggin’ Out July 19 - 23 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Explore the fascinating life of the creepy crawly! Discover what separates insects from other arthropods. Create a specimen collection of your own and investigate insect lifecycles. Visit the streams and meadows of Camp Giscowheco.
It Starts With a Seed July 26 - 30 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Conduct intriguing experiments to better understand the life of plants and investigate the ways in which people use them. Examine the parts of flowers and trees and take a wildflower hunt.
Up In The Sky… Aug. 2 - 6 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm It’s a bird! Make your own birdfeeders and identify the birds that come to snack. Listen to bird songs on a walk through the forest. Conduct point quarter surveys throughout Oglebay.
Nature Olympics Aug. 9 - 13 $95/$80 OI members 9am - 3pm Compete in a week of challenging games and events. Can you lift more than an ant? Can you run faster than an ostrich? Can you jump farther than a rabbit? Learn about the amazing athletic abilities of animals as you and your team try to win the gold medal.

Junior Rangers Volunteer Program Jun. 7 - Aug. 20 None Varies Junior Rangers will have the opportunity to volunteer at the Schrader Environmental Center three days per week during the summer, assisting with educational programs, interpretive exhibits and trail improvements. This supervised program will include training and research; Junior Rangers will work in teams to create, develop and complete projects.
