Environmental Education: Research
Project FLOW

What is Project FLOW?

F.L.O.W. stands for the Future Leaders of Watersheds. It is designed to teach youth the connection between human impact and the environment, as well as instill a sense of civic responsibility.

What is a watershed?

A watershed is an area of land where water flows to a common source. Ohio, Brooke, and Marshall County are located in the Upper Ohio South Watershed. All of our water flows into the Ohio River.

Why is it important to protect our watershed?

All of our streams flow into the Ohio River, a primary source of drinking water in Ohio, Brooke, and Marshall County. Anything that enters a stream can potentially lower the quality of drinking water, and disrupt important biological systems.

What can you do to help?

Join the Watershed Investigation Club hosted by the Schrader Environmental Education Center. Call 304.242.6855 for details.

MISSION:
  • Engage students in grades 5-12 in the WV counties of Brooke, Ohio, and Marshall in service learning to study and improve the health of the Upper Ohio South watershed for future generations.

  • Bring together multiple groups within the northern panhandle: scientists working for state and federal agencies, college professors, environmental community organizations, and K-12 schools.

  • Introduce students to hands-on science that includes: recording habitat information with written descriptions and digital photography, sampling the water chemistry, and surveying benthic macroinvertebrates found in the water.
  • Provide training workshops for community volunteers and K-12 teachers.

  • Provide support for the formation of new watershed groups in the Northern Panhandle.
