About the Film

Set in the 1920s, “The Quiet Man” tells the story of Sean Thornton (John Wayne), a retired Irish-American prizefighter who decides to buy a home in a small Irish village from which his family emigrated.

In the village he meets and falls in love with Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O’Hara), a fiery-tempered local woman who is a bit past the customary time to get married. What follows is a series of events that make Thornton realize that the customs of dating and marriage are much different in Ireland than in the U.S.

The movie has something for everyone. From the extraordinary Irish countryside, which was shot on location, to the performances of Wayne and O’Hara, the movie serves as a love letter to Ireland’s most captivating self-images, myths, and humor.
