Event Details

A unique movie theater in Wheeling, Towngate is home to the Wheeling Film Society, which offers free screenings of some of America’s most iconic films.

Wheeling Film Society presents Dr. Strangelove
Free Screening at 7:30 p.m.  Friday, November 9, 2018

(Conversation about the film takes place at noon Tuesday, November 13 at the Ohio County Public Library.)

Last season, the Wheeling Film Society watched Kubrick’s 1968 epic, 2001: A Space Odyssey, with its surprisingly hopeful vision of an alternative to the terminal aggression of the human species. Dr. Strangelove was the exceedingly black-comic film Kubrick made four years before 2001: a slapstick comedy about nuclear apocalypse.

If you can’t imagine the end of life on Earth as a suitable subject for laughs, you haven’t seen the inspired Peter Sellers play three different roles (including the President of the United States AND the mastermind of the nuclear bomb), or the manic George C. Scott nearly steal the film as a lunatic general (six years before his Oscar for Patton). Made during the depths of the Cold War, Dr. Strangelove is also a film for our times.

You Can Have Dinner at Towngate, too!

Moviegoers have the option to have dinner in Towngate’s social room prior to the Wheeling Film Society screenings!  Park once and enjoy twice the fun!

Buffet dinners will be served promptly at 6:30 p.m. before each Wheeling Film Society screening.  After dinner, head upstairs for the free movie at 7:30 p.m.   The cost for dinner is $20 and includes all food, soft drinks, coffee, tea, water and a box of popcorn to enjoy during the film.   Beer and wine are available for purchase.

You must make reservations for dinner by 5 p.m. Wednesday prior to the screening. You don’t need to make reservations for the film.

Ye Olde Alpha provides the food for the November 9 dinner and a movie. Menu TBA.

Make reservations online or by calling 304-242-7700 by 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 7.  Space is limited.  Don’t delay.

Why Go To the Movie Theater?

Oglebay Institute, Wheeling Jesuit University and the Ohio County Public partnered to form the Wheeling Film Society. WFS events bring movie buffs together to watch and discuss classic films. Screenings and post-screening discussions are free and open to the public.

So, get off the couch! Stop binge watching by yourself. Hollywood movies are meant to be seen with others, in the movie theater, on the BIG screen. The actors are figuratively and literally larger than life! Get together with other movie lovers. Engage in thought-provoking conversation. You will learn more about the art and history of cinema, too.

Towngate: A unique movie theater in Wheeling.

A church-turned-theater, Towngate is located in Wheeling’s historic Centre Market District.

At Towngate, not only can you watch live theater productions, spoken word performances, improv and concerts, you can see movies, too! Towngate is also a single screen cinema. On select weekends throughout the year, we show a host of classic and independent films, thought-provoking documentaries and film shorts by local and regional filmmakers. Our movie selections encourage thought and conversation. You won’t be disappointed. Our regulars know we only show quality films. Sometimes, they show up for screenings without knowing the title of the film. They trust us that much.

Whether you consider yourself a film buff or you only like movies for the popcorn, our films will entertain and inspire. See you at Towngate!
