Event Details

A unique movie theater in Wheeling, Towngate is home to the Wheeling Film Society, which offers free screenings of some of America’s most iconic films.

Wheeling Film Society presents The Wizard of Oz
Free Screening at 7:30 p.m.  Friday, March 8, 2019

(Conversation about the film takes place at noon Tuesday, March 12 at the Ohio County Public Library.)

Generations of fans of The Wizard of Oz grew up watching the perennially beloved film on tiny, grainy television sets, marred by cuts and commercial-breaks that fractured continuity but gave kids time to catch their breath between bouts with wicked witches and flying monkeys. The film, which turns 80 this year, continues to speak to the kid in all of us – as well as to avant-garde novelists like Salman Rushdie and filmmakers like David Lynch.

After you see it again at Towngate, take the “Kansas test”: is it really true that “There’s no place like home?” Also, the wizard is nothing but a “humbug,” but what of a film that reassures us it was “just a dream”? While it was hardly an overnight success, few films have managed to probe deeper inside our fears, hopes – and dreams.

You Can Have Dinner at Towngate, too!

Moviegoers have the option to have dinner in Towngate’s social room prior to the Wheeling Film Society screenings!  Park once and enjoy twice the fun!

Buffet dinners will be served promptly at 6:30 p.m. before each Wheeling Film Society screening.  After dinner, head upstairs for the free movie at 7:30 p.m.   The cost for dinner is $20 and includes all food, soft drinks, coffee, tea, water and a box of popcorn to enjoy during the film.   Beer and wine are available for purchase.

You must make reservations for dinner by 5 p.m. Wednesday prior to the screening. You don’t need to make reservations for the film.

Ye Olde Alpha provides the food for the March 8 dinner and a movie. Menu TBA.

Make reservations online or by calling 304-242-7700 by 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 6.  Space is limited.  Don’t delay.

Why Go To the Movie Theater?

Oglebay Institute, Wheeling Jesuit University and the Ohio County Public partnered to form the Wheeling Film Society. WFS events bring movie buffs together to watch and discuss classic films. Screenings and post-screening discussions are free and open to the public.

So, get off the couch! Stop binge watching by yourself. Hollywood movies are meant to be seen with others, in the movie theater, on the BIG screen. The actors are figuratively and literally larger than life! Get together with other movie lovers. Engage in thought-provoking conversation. You will learn more about the art and history of cinema, too.

Towngate: A unique movie theater in Wheeling.

A church-turned-theater, Towngate is located in Wheeling’s historic Centre Market District.

At Towngate, not only can you watch live theater productions, spoken word performances, improv and concerts, you can see movies, too! Towngate is also a single screen cinema. On select weekends throughout the year, we show a host of classic and independent films, thought-provoking documentaries and film shorts by local and regional filmmakers. Our movie selections encourage thought and conversation. You won’t be disappointed. Our regulars know we only show quality films. Sometimes, they show up for screenings without knowing the title of the film. They trust us that much.

Whether you consider yourself a film buff or you only like movies for the popcorn, our films will entertain and inspire. See you at Towngate!
