Towngate Theatre Presents: Dark of the Moon

A Haunting Appalachian Tale of Love, Fear, and Faith:

Towngate Theatre invites audiences into the mysterious world of Dark of the Moon, Howard Richardson’s acclaimed drama inspired by the haunting Scottish folk ballad The Ballad of Barbara Allen.

Directed by Dave Henderson, this imaginative Broadway classic blends Appalachian storytelling, folklore, romance, and gothic spirituality in a powerful theatrical experience that continues to captivate audiences decades after its debut.

Set in a close-knit Smoky Mountain community, Dark of the Moon follows John, a mysterious “witch boy” who longs to become human after falling in love with the beautiful Barbara Allen. Their forbidden romance challenges long-held fears, prejudices, and superstitions, creating a moving story of love, acceptance, sacrifice, and the consequences of intolerance.

Filled with rich characters, memorable storytelling, and atmospheric staging, the production explores timeless themes that remain strikingly relevant today.
