A Special Commemorative Program at the Mansion Museum
On June 22, 1926, the Ohio Valley lost one of its most influential leaders and most generous philanthropists: Earl W. Oglebay. One hundred years later, Oglebay Institute invites the community to honor his legacy with a special program at the Mansion Museum, exploring the life, character, and far‑reaching impact of the man behind Oglebay Park.
Born in 1849 and raised in the Wheeling area, Earl W. Oglebay built a remarkable career that spanned banking, industry, agriculture, and education. By age 28, he had become the youngest bank president in the nation, later guiding major industrial ventures including the Benwood Iron Works and the iron ore operations that grew into Oglebay, Norton & Company. His passion for agricultural innovation transformed his beloved Waddington Farm into a center for scientific research, particularly in the breeding of sheep and dairy cattle. His advocacy for rural youth helped spark the movement that would become the national 4‑H program.
This commemorative program brings Earl Oglebay’s story to life through rare photographs, and artifacts from the Mansion Museum collection. Guests will hear excerpts from his personal letters, including his vivid account of being in Europe at the outbreak of World War I and the urgency with which he had to flee the continent.
The presentation also explores the extraordinary generosity that shaped the region for generations. Oglebay’s decision to deed Waddington Farm to the City of Wheeling laid the foundation for the municipal park we know today. His family continued that legacy—his nephew, Crispin Oglebay, founded Oglebay Institute to ensure the city would accept and steward the property, and his descendants have remained active supporters of the arts, culture, and education in the Ohio Valley.
