How to Create a Dynamic Painting
Whether you’re new to painting, or a seasoned artist feeling stuck, this 6-week class will guide you back to the foundations that make great artwork possible. This course concentrates on building a portrait painting but the fundamentals apply to painting any subject matter. Each week, we’ll focus on one of the six essential building blocks of a strong, dynamic painting. If your work isn’t coming together, it’s probably because something fundamental was missed. We’ll uncover exactly what that is in this class. Open to every level painter, beginner to advanced. (Limit 14)
Week-by-Week Overview:

• Week 1: Start simple—draw basic shapes. Learn how understanding value and form makes all the difference.
• Week 2: Nail your proportions with easy-to-remember tips that make drawing people more intuitive and accurate.
• Week 3: Dive into perspective—why it matters and how it transforms your work. Then we’ll explore composition and design for strong visual impact.
• Week 4: Let’s unlock the power of color! You’ll learn to mix with the Zorn palette, avoid muddy colors, and create dynamic, intentional combinations.
• Week 5: Discover the strength of value by painting a black-and-white portrait using only three values. You’ll see just how powerful limited contrast can be.
• Week 6: Learn to paint skin tones and glaze color over your value study—bringing your portrait to life with vibrance and depth.
