
Held at the Stifel Fine Arts Center, the valley’s preeminent resource for art education, Oglebay Institute’s Visual Arts Department offers a variety of classes in traditional and non-traditional mediums.
Painting and pottery classes are offered each session. Crafts including jewelry making, woodcarving and stained glass are also available. A variety of workshops round-out our diverse curriculum.
Classes are available for most ages, interests and skill levels. Students work with up-to-date equipment and supplies with guidance from expert instructors in a relaxed and creatively stimulating environment.

Intermediate Portrait Painting – NEW!
Ready to take your portrait work to the next level? This class is designed for students who already have some painting experience and are ready to strengthen their ability to paint the human face with more confidence and accuracy. In this four-week session, we’ll continue developing essential portrait skills through guided studies that focus on: building stronger form and structure, improving proportions and facial features, creating realistic light and shadow, mixing and choosing effective skin tones and color harmony and developing brushwork and technique to create a more finished painterly portrait. Intermediate to Advanced Oil Painting
Expanding from the Beginning Oil Painting. Painting throughout the 8-week session. Expanding on painting Alla Prima (all at once) and Traditional Paint (wet on dry). We will explore tone, value, and color theory. We go deeper into composition. We will look at the selection of materials, how to choose the color and the properties and selection of oil paints available, how to make the selection of brushes and knives, and how to use them. We will explore the different painting surfaces and how to prepare them for oil painting, demonstrate how to stretch a canvas and prepare it for oil paint, and how to varnish the painted works. Echos & Impressions: Encaustics Mark-Making Workshop
Discover how to draw, etch, and press your own marks into wax. This workshop focuses on the expressive possibilities of encaustic surface work — from scratching and carving to imprinting with fabric, stamps, and found textures. Tin Collage Workshop
In this class, you will learn how to create a color, value, and texture palette using printed/colored repurposed metal from tin cans and other metal materials. Students will learn how to deconstruct various metal containers and materials, then attaching these materials to an armature (support). Using your palette of metal, you will learn to how to create original, one-of-a kind works of art that carry your personal vision.
Techniques or skills taught in workshop:
selecting metal; learning about the various types of snips; cutting metal; safety; armatures; preparing metal for attachment to armature; making changes (corrections); preparing your finished work for display.
Material outcome of the workshop:
Student will leave with #1: a set of skills that enable to create work using repurposed metal; #2: student will leave with a completed (or partially completed) project.

Wire Wrapped Rainbow Fluorite Pendant Workshop
In this workshop, you will learn & practice basic wire wrapping skills to make a beautiful gemstone pendant. You will use sterling silver wire, small gemstone bead embellishments, and a top drilled bead made of Rainbow Fluorite, a gemstone ranging in colors from blue to green to purple. Fluorite symbolizes clartiy, focus, and harmony. It provides strength to make decisions that will lead us towards serenity and abundance in life. Steampunk Resin Workshop (Spring 2026)
Discover Steampunk, an art form inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery that incorporates machine parts like gears and clock hands to create fantasy 3D pieces. In this Resin workshop you can choose to make either a ring OR 1 pair of stud earrings. You will end up with a 12mm round mini collage of tiny assorted antique watch parts which will be preserved forever under a clear glass-like resin. After the resin has cured for 24 hours you can stop by the Stifle Center at your convenience to pick up your creation.

Vintage Key Necklace Workshop (Spring 2026)
In this hour-long workshop you will learn some basic jewelry making skills, including beginner wire wrapping, to make your very own one-of-a-kind necklace. You will choose from a variety of materials including a vintage key of your choice, faceted glass beads & a charm of your choice. You will also learn to make a custom chain at whatever length you prefer.
