Magic of the Pottery Wheel
Students will work with clay on the pottery wheel and use a variety of hand building techniques that will produce amazing results. All pottery will be glazed and functional.

For beginners to expert. Learn woodcarving techniques at your own pace from experienced carvers.

Beginning Oil Painting
Explore what you need to start painting with oils. Learn what materials to use and how to use them to produce your painting. Paint along with Greg and on your own with guidance. Materials not included; supply list will be emailed to you.

Intermediate to Advanced Oil Painting
Expand on techniques from the Beginners Oil Painting class including Alla Prima painting (all at once) and traditional painting (wet on dry). We’ll explore tone, value, and color theory while going deeper into composition. Learn how to choose materials such as brushes, knives, colors, and the properties and selection of available oil paints. How to prepare different painting surfaces, including stretching a canvas, will also be covered. A material list will be e-mailed to you.

Beginning Watercolor (Morning)
Explore and enjoy the painting process while learning the fundamentals of watercolor. Learn basic techniques and color mixing in watercolor to create different subjects each week. Each week we will use basic techniques to create exciting paintings. Subjects include florals, landscapes, and animals.

Let’s Paint People!
We’ll follow a simple process to take the intimidation away from trying to paint people. The instructor will provide instruction, demos, and fun photos from which to paint. All levels are welcome. Laurie will provide one-on-one instruction and is very hands on. Basic oil paints, brushes and canvas will be provided.

Open Pottery Studio
This is open to students who have taken pottery classes at the Stifel Fine Arts Center before. There will be no instructor during open studio, but students will receive shelf space and may make a maximum of 16 pots. Additional pots $5 each. (Limit 15)

Hand Building Pottery with Rick Morgan
Learn how to make ceramic projects without a pottery wheel. We will use slab, coil, and pinch methods too make beautiful, functional pottery. Projects like cups, mugs, plates, bowls, and ceramic holiday decorations will be explored.

Gel Plate Printing Workshop
Using Gel Plates and stencils or floral materials, we will make unique prints that can be incorporated into collages, greeting cards, art journals, or mounted on canvas or wood to make personalized, decorative pieces. Class is open to all levels, from beginner to advanced. Gel plates and stencils will be provided for use in class, along with paints and paper. Bring leaves and other floral materials if desired. (Limit 10)

Introduction to Stencil Monoprinting Workshop
Learn how to make one-of-a-kind prints using an old-fashioned printing press, plexiglass plates, lithographic inks, and handmade papers. Discover the basics of press use, as well as inking techniques. We will work with stencils and found objects to create diverse print compositions. Please bring an apron as inks can stain. All materials will be provided. (Limit 5)

Jewelry Basics Workshop
In this hour-long workshop, we will explore all the essential jewelry-making skills to create beautiful earrings. We will use a variety of materials including crystals, glass, pearls, & metal. You will get to be as creative as you’d like, keeping your earrings simple or complex, whatever inspires you! Beginner level. (Limit 12)

Painting Floral Still Life in Oils
Using beautiful floral still life setups, we’ll create wonderful paintings with an understanding of good composition, color, and brushwork. Spend a Winter Saturday feeling spring has arrived by creating it on canvas. The instructor is very hands-on and will help any level of painting experience. (Limit 14)

Steampunk Resin Workshop
Discover Steampunk, an art form inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery that incorporates machine parts like gears and clock hands to create fantasy 3D pieces. In this Resin workshop, you can choose to make either a ring OR one pair of stud earrings. You will end up with a 12mm round mini collage of tiny assorted antique watch parts which will be preserved forever under a clear glass-like resin. After the resin has cured for 24 hours, you can stop by the Stifel Center at your convenience to pick up your creation. Beginner level. (Limit 15)

Wire Wrapped Rainbow Fluorite Workshop
In this workshop, you will learn & practice basic wire wrapping skills to make a beautiful gemstone pendant. You will use sterling silver wire, small gemstone bead embellishments, & a top drilled bead made of Rainbow Fluorite, a gemstone ranging in colors from blue to green to purple. Fluorite symbolizes clarity, focus, & harmony. It provides strength to make decisions that will lead us towards serenity and abundance in life. This workshop is an Intermediate skill level & requires some hand strength & dexterity. (Limit 10)

Hand Building Demo: Sunshine Cobb “Exploring Functional Hand Building”
Sunshine’s demonstration will motivate you to experiment with new and old forms and methods of construction. Her workshop is geared toward creative expansion and a process-over-product mentality that beginners to advanced students will be inspired by. The workshop will include coil and pinch methods and hard and soft slab construction to generate pottery components. She will speak to the building surface through the making process and discuss the glaze and surface treatment of her work.
Sunshine’s work foundation is very much based in the tradition of historic ceramics, but she is a completely modern potter with contemporary themes in her work. She will talk about inspiration and how abstract concepts make their way into her work and how to foster similar insertion into your own creative practice. (Limit 50)

Ceramic Sculpture Demo: George Rodriguez “The Ornamental Figure”
Artist George Rodriguez will demonstrate his unique style of forming and ornamenting a small figure. This four-hour demonstration will focus on creating a sculpture using the slab technique and two-part press molds. Decorative surface elements will cover the figure.

Rodriguez is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in Tyler’s Ceramics Program. Rodriguez creates highly ornamented, figurative ceramic sculptures, often connected to sociopolitical issues. His sculptures are part of museum collections, including the National Museum of Mexican Art, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the National Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. Artist Talk: Rebecca Harvey “Consuming the Other—Dinnerware and the Decorative”
Collective ideas shape and mold our perceptions of the world and these new perceptions are in turn reflected in the environments we construct for ourselves. Objects tell our stories for us; they construct the reality we wish to see. I am interested in the odd, the illogical, the seemingly random objects and images that fill our world. Their meanings often operate outside the bounds of taste and decorum flitting at the edges of our understanding. This talk will explore some of the ways in which this has been manifested in ceramics historically and poke around the edges of our ability as humans to attach meaning. (Limit 50)
