Visual Arts Classes

Pottery Class

Held at the Stifel Fine Arts Center, the valley’s preeminent resource for art education, Oglebay Institute’s Visual Arts Department offers a variety of classes in traditional and non-traditional mediums.

Painting and pottery classes are offered each session. Crafts including jewelry making, furniture refinishing, woodcarving and stained glass are also available. A variety of workshops round-out our diverse curriculum.

Classes are available for most ages, interests and skill levels. Students work with up-to-date equipment and supplies with guidance from expert instructors in a relaxed and creatively stimulating environment.

Kid’s Art with Katie
Kids will create fun art making projects in a variety of materials in a space where they create freely in a group setting. The projects focus on weekly themes and students will develop observational, technical, cooperative and self-expressive skills by engaging in the art making process. Painting from Nature
Learn how to take inspiration from nature for your paintings while experimenting with expressionistic, abstract, impressionist, and realistic painting styles. We will be painting outdoors from life and indoors from sketches, photos, and natural objects. Nature-based and landscape painting artists will be presented. Students will leave more confident and inspired to add new techniques and subject matter to their artistic practice. We will be working primarily in watercolor and acrylic, but you are welcome to bring oil paints if you prefer. Materials and equipment are provided.

Open Pottery Studio
This is open to students who have taken pottery classes at the Stifel Fine Arts Center before. There will be no instructor during open studio but students will receive shelf space and may make a maximum of 16 pots. Additional pots $5 each. (Limit of 15 participants.)

Copper Hand-Cutting Keychain Workshop presented by Diana Laura
In this workshop, we will be hand-cutting a simple keychain accessory out of copper. The class will mainly focus on developing technique and comfortability for using a jewelry saw.

Monoprinting with Gel Plates presented by Frances Metcalf
Learn how to make monotype prints using gel plates. Monotypes are a type of printmaking that produce one image on paper. No printing press is required—once you take this class, you can print at home. Learn about inking techniques, using stencils, and ways you can use the prints you make including collage, backgrounds for other art pieces, and art journals.

Bring your own stencils and items for making textures or use the ones provided in class. Flowers and leaves are great for gel plate printing. Bring an apron to protect your clothing.

Note: Gel plates will be available for use in class.

Copper On Copper Painting Class by Diana Laura
Learn how to patina a copper sheet using only 3 house-safe ingredients. The magic mainly happens after the class when you see your beautiful painting slowly turn “Liberty green,” or you can leave it as is and seal what you painted in class.

Introduction to Stencil Monoprinting presented by Frances Metcalf
Learn how to make monotype prints using a printing press and stencils. Monotypes are a type of printmaking that produce one image on paper. Discover the basics of press use, as well as inking techniques and work with paper, ink, found objects, pattern, and texture to create diverse print compositions.
