Visual Arts Classes

Pottery Class

Held at the Stifel Fine Arts Center, the valley’s preeminent resource for art education, Oglebay Institute’s Visual Arts Department offers a variety of classes in traditional and non-traditional mediums.

Painting and pottery classes are offered each session. Crafts including jewelry making, woodcarving and stained glass are also available. A variety of workshops round-out our diverse curriculum.

Classes are available for most ages, interests and skill levels. Students work with up-to-date equipment and supplies with guidance from expert instructors in a relaxed and creatively stimulating environment.

Art with Mr. Brad
Get ready to roll up your sleeves, dip your brush, and let your creativity fly! In “Art with Mr. Brad”, kids explore the magical world of art through lesson-based projects, playful technique experiments, and plenty of free-expression time. Beginner to Intermediate Graphite Drawing
This 8-week class will guide you through foundational graphite drawing skills to improve your abilities as an artist. Intermediate to Advanced Oil Painting
Expanding from the Beginning Oil Painting. Painting throughout the 8 week session. Expanding on painting Alla Prima (all at once) and Traditional Paint (wet on dry),We will explore tone, value, and color theory. We go deeper into composition.

We will look at the selection of materials, how to choose the color and the properties and selection of oil paints available, how to make the selection of brushes and knives, and how to use them.

We will explore the different painting surfaces and how to prepare them for oil painting, demonstrate how to stretch a canvas and prepare it for oil paint, and how to varnish the painted works.

Portrait Painting
Discover the timeless beauty of portrait painting through the luminous world of oil paints. In this class, students will learn to capture the human face with expression, accuracy, and personality—building from simple shapes to refined likenesses.

Through step-by-step demonstrations and individual guidance, you’ll explore fundamental concepts such as proportion, light and shadow, color mixing, and brushwork. We’ll work from reference photos to understand structure, value relationships, and skin tones while developing confidence with the materials and techniques of oil painting.
No prior portrait experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to learn! By the end of the session, you’ll have a finished portrait study and the foundational skills to continue your journey in painting people. (Limit 14)

Watercolor Monoprinting
Love watercolors and collage? This is the class for you. We’ll spend the first week creating textures, hues, and tints on special papers using multiple watercolor media, including liquid, tube, and pan watercolors, along with cray-pas and watercolor markers. In our second session, we’ll work on developing ideas for images, creating our first collages, and printing. In our final lesson, we’ll focus on additional prints and refining and finishing our creations. No experience is necessary for this class. Winter Walks: Encaustics Nature Collage Workshop
This workshop invites participants to create encaustic artworks inspired by quiet winter walks. Students are encouraged to bring natural materials such as dried leaves, twigs, and seed pods, and they will learn how to embed these organic elements into layers of molten beeswax and pigment to create luminous, textured compositions. Each participant will leave with a finished piece that captures the still beauty of the winter

Gel Plate Workshop
Love gel plate printing, but don’t know what to do with all those prints? Interested in Gel Plate, but don’t know how to get started? This class is for all levels of gel plate printers. Experienced printers can bring their existing materials or make new prints during this workshop. Newbies can learn how to print … and everyone can take all those beautiful gel plate images and create fabulous collages on canvas and wood panels. We’ll use stencils, found objects, and household items to enhance our collages, so bring your imaginations and your stashes of goodies to this class. Finding Your Creative Spirit
Unleash your creativity and discover the joy of mixed media exploration! In this lively, hands-on class, you’ll design and build a one-of-a-kind sketchbook filled with color, texture, and personality. Using everything from gold leaf and handmade papers to inks, acrylic paints, collage, and drawing materials, you’ll experiment freely with techniques that spark inspiration and play.

Ceramic Underglazing with Goldie
Explore the art of painting with underglazes to add stunning, hand-painted designs to your pottery. Tin Collage Workshop
In this class, you will learn how to create a color, value, and texture palette using printed/colored repurposed metal from tin cans and other metal materials. Students will learn how to deconstruct various metal containers and materials, then attaching these materials to an armature (support). Using your palette of metal, you will learn to how to create original, one-of-a kind works of art that carry your personal vision.

Techniques or skills taught in workshop:
selecting metal; learning about the various types of snips; cutting metal; safety; armatures; preparing metal for attachment to armature; making changes (corrections); preparing your finished work for display.

Material outcome of the workshop:
Student will leave with #1: a set of skills that enable to create work using repurposed metal; #2: student will leave with a completed (or partially completed) project.

Timeless Art: Creating Encaustic Clocks Workshop

In honor of Daylight Savings Time, make time stand still — literally. In this unique encaustic workshop, participants will transform a wooden cradle board into a fully functional art clock. Freddie will provide all components, including the clock mechanism, and guide students through building a waxed, textured, and beautifully finished surface that doubles as art and utility. Wire Wrapped Rainbow Fluorite Pendant Workshop

In this workshop, you will learn & practice basic wire wrapping skills to make a beautiful gemstone pendant. You will use sterling silver wire, small gemstone bead embellishments, and a top drilled bead made of Rainbow Fluorite, a gemstone ranging in colors from blue to green to purple. Fluorite symbolizes clartiy, focus, and harmony. It provides strength to make decisions that will lead us towards serenity and abundance in life. Experimenting with Composite Structures

Ruth will demonstrate the toolkit of techniques she uses to build her sculptures. Tinkering both mentally and physically with classic building methods have helped her create a menu of options for achieving desired outcomes. Pattern Play with Margaret Kinkeade Workshop

By translating the logic of patternmaking to hand-built ceramics, Margaret Kinkeade reveals how flipping, stacking, and altering template-cut slabs can create a spectrum of related yet distinct objects.
