Visual Arts Classes

Pottery Class

Held at the Stifel Fine Arts Center, the valley’s preeminent resource for art education, Oglebay Institute’s Visual Arts Department offers a variety of classes in traditional and non-traditional mediums.

Painting and pottery classes are offered each session. Crafts including jewelry making, furniture refinishing, woodcarving and stained glass are also available. A variety of workshops round-out our diverse curriculum.

Classes are available for most ages, interests and skill levels. Students work with up-to-date equipment and supplies with guidance from expert instructors in a relaxed and creatively stimulating environment.

Crafts

Bookbinding (NEW!)
Creating books offers the artist freedom to make a book that reflects their imagination and personality using a wide variety of tools and materials. Use papers, book boards, book cloth, glues and more to create an accordion style book, Japanese Stab book, coptic stitch book and junk journal. We’ll also have a repurposing challenge that will consist of transforming an old book into a new work of art and a mini lesson in paper marbling. Once you know the basics, the possibilities are boundless! Let’s get cutting, gluing and sewing!

Into Into Mixed Media
This 8 week art course is designed for all levels. Students will discover new art supplies and how to mix and apply them in various ways through playful expression, mark making, and creative layers. Drawing is the primary tool artists and designers use as the basics for any artistic endeavor. In this course, you’ll learn the basics of drawing such as contours, shading and the illusion of space. We’ll be drawing from observation and use graphite, charcoal and pen & ink if time allows.

Open Pottery Studio
This is open to students who have taken pottery classes at the Stifel Fine Arts Center before. There will be no instructor during open studio but students will receive shelf space and may make a maximum of 16 pots. Additional pots $4 each.

Workshops

Paper Marbling Workshop (NEW!)
Create gorgeous and intricate patterns in the Ebru technique like the masters in 15th Century Persia.Choose your papers and paint colors, all of which are provided. Experiment and play with designs. Learn how to prepare the papers and the bath liquid for marbling the paint. We’ll cover a variety of tools and techniques that will allow students to create their own marbled pattered papers. You’ll be amazed at the beautiful papers you create which can be framed, used in collages, bookbinding or as gifts.

Silk Painting Workshop (NEW!)
Learn the process of transforming a white piece of silk into a custom-designed wearable piece of art. Start by tracing a design onto silk using Gutta Resist. Once dry, move the silk to a frame to paint the design using silk paint. Once the paint is dry the silk is removed from the frame and ironed to set the color and fuse the resist to the silk. The final design is permanent and the scarf is hand washable.

Steampunk Domed Resin Ring Workshop (NEW!)
Discover Steampunk, an art form inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery that incorporates machine parts like gears and cogs to create fantasy 3D pieces. In this workshop, we’ll make a 12mm round mini collage of tiny assorted antique watch parts and preserve it forever under a clear glass-like resin. After the resin has cured for 24 hours, you can stop by the Stifel Center at your convenience to pick up your ring.
