Held at the Stifel Fine Arts Center, the valley’s preeminent resource for art education, Oglebay Institute’s Visual Arts Department offers a variety of classes in traditional and non-traditional mediums.
Painting and pottery classes are offered each session. Crafts including jewelry making, furniture refinishing, woodcarving and stained glass are also available. A variety of workshops round-out our diverse curriculum.
Classes are available for most ages, interests and skill levels. Students work with up-to-date equipment and supplies with guidance from expert instructors in a relaxed and creatively stimulating environment.

Painting from Nature
Learn how to take inspiration from nature for your paintings while experimenting with expressionistic, abstract, impressionist, and realistic painting styles. We will be painting outdoors from life and indoors from sketches, photos, and natural objects. Nature-based and landscape painting artists will be presented. Students will leave more confident and inspired to add new techniques and subject matter to their artistic practice. Handbuilding Interactive Flower Sculpture Workshop with Shoji Satake
Spend the day creating unique clay flower sculptures in this interactive hands-on workshop. Shoji will demonstrate and the participants will engage in the art of clay flower making, which traces its roots in Asia for more than 2000 years. Ceramic Workshop with Ken McCollum
This two-day workshop with Ken McCollum (1st Place winner of Earth and Fire Exhibition 2023) will be demonstrating how he makes his wall clocks or wall hanging platters. Day one will be creating your own plaster mold that you will take home and use any time after the workshop. Then you will be shown how to form clay using plaster mold and leave them to dry for day two. Second day will be finishing and decorating your platter by learning the carving and dot technique that Ken uses to finish his pieces.
