Visual Arts Classes

Pottery Class

Held at the Stifel Fine Arts Center, the valley’s preeminent resource for art education, Oglebay Institute’s Visual Arts Department offers a variety of classes in traditional and non-traditional mediums.

Painting and pottery classes are offered each session. Crafts including jewelry making, furniture refinishing, woodcarving and stained glass are also available. A variety of workshops round-out our diverse curriculum.

Classes are available for most ages, interests and skill levels. Students work with up-to-date equipment and supplies with guidance from expert instructors in a relaxed and creatively stimulating environment.

Those entering OI facilities should expect the following:

  • Masks will be required or recommended to coincide with current state & CDC guidelines.
  • Temperatures may be checked upon entering.
  • A short health screening questionnaire may be required.

Magic of the Pottery Wheel
Students will work with clay on the pottery wheel and use a variety of hand building techniques that will produce amazing results.

Those enrolling in the Magic of the Pottery Wheel with Debbie Joseph can apply for scholarship funding to cover the cost of the class. The Tom Smith Memorial Scholarship was established to honor long-time Oglebay Institute potter Tom Smith. It was funded by donations made in Tom’s honor following his death in 2020. This is open to students who have taken pottery classes at the Stifel Fine Arts Center before. There will be no instructor during open studio but students will receive shelf space and may make a maximum of 16 pots. Additional pots $4 each.

Crystal Sun Catchers Workshop (NEW!)
Add a little sparkle to your life this spring. In this hour workshop, we’ll make two crystal sun catchers using colorful Swarovski Crystals. Hang them the rear view mirror of your car or in a sunny window. They’ll catch the light & reflect beautiful rainbow prisms all around.

Dainty Gemstone Jewelry Workshop (NEW!)
Make either one necklace or one bracelet with your choice of beautiful gemstone beads on silver chain. Work with small beads & thin wire doing basic wire wrapping. Some hand dexterity is required.

Steampunk Resin Necklace Workshop
Discover Steampunk, an art form inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery that incorporates machine parts like gears and cogs to create fantasy 3D pieces. On day one, we’ll make a mini collage of assorted antique watch parts and preserve it forever under a clear glass-like resin. On day two, after the resin has cured, we’ll finish the pendant & make a custom chain. Walk away with a one-of-a-kind piece that will impress all of your family & friends!
