Visual Arts Classes

Pottery Class

Held at the Stifel Fine Arts Center, the valley’s preeminent resource for art education, Oglebay Institute’s Visual Arts Department offers a variety of classes in traditional and non-traditional mediums.

Painting and pottery classes are offered each session. Crafts including jewelry making, furniture refinishing, woodcarving and stained glass are also available. A variety of workshops round-out our diverse curriculum.

Classes are available for most ages, interests and skill levels. Students work with up-to-date equipment and supplies with guidance from expert instructors in a relaxed and creatively stimulating environment.

Art Club

Painting Exploration
This class introduces painting techniques to students ready to create realistic observational paintings and develop their creative skills. Students will create works of art and have a basic knowledge of painting to continue as young artists in the future. All skill levels are welcome.

Kids’ Art with Katie
Kids will create fun artmaking projects in a variety of materials in a space where they create freely in a group setting. The projects focus on weekly themes and students will develop observational, technical, cooperative, and self-expressive skills by engaging in the artmaking process. Students will create paintings, prints, sculptures, and more!

Senior Programs

Full Life Arts & Wellness: Home Crafts for Adults 65+

Step by step instruction making crafts for your home or for others! No paper plate masks (not that there’s anything wrong with that), but projects you’ll enjoy having in your home. A new project will be offered each week, including a stuffed snowman, mosaic trays, paper flowers, tile coasters, and more! Held at Stifel Fine Arts Center.

Abstract Painting & Drawing
This painting & drawing course is designed for beginner to advanced levels interested in learning more about abstraction. We will focus on various techniques of abstract art learning by examples throughout art history as well as welcoming experimentation through materials. Experimental Painting
This beginner-advanced painting class pushes the boundaries of what is thought of as traditional painting and welcomes experimentation. This class combines observational/realistic painting with expressive color as well as experimentation through materials and subject matter. Contemporary art examples are presented. Students investigate materials and techniques with mixed media and acrylic paint while strengthening their painting skills and knowledge. Students will have fun and gain enthusiasm and confidence with the painting process.

Unlock your creativity in Watercolor Explorations, a course designed for students interested in exploring watercolors as well as using tools and additives to create unique works of art. Open Pottery Studio
This is open to students who have taken pottery classes at the Stifel Fine Arts Center before. There will be no instructor during open studio but students will receive shelf space and may make a maximum of 16 pots. Additional pots $5 each. (Limit of 20 participants.)

Ceramic Workshop with Richard “Duke” Miecznikowski
This one-day workshop with Richard “Duke” Miecznikowski will be a demonstration of wheel-made pottery. He will be demonstrating making and finishing a variety of wheel- thrown pieces. Demonstrations will include some of the techniques in making functional, as well as decorative work. There will be an opportunity for questions from the audience to dive deeper into his process and his work. Held at the Stifel Center Pottery Studio

From Slab to Fab: A Ceramic Workshop with Jen Allen
This workshop’s focus is to transform two-dimensional slab shapes (from templates) into three-dimensional pottery forms. I will start with demonstrations of various stamp-making techniques in order to dress up the clay slabs. Then, I will move into the development of forms including a cup, a pitcher, a jar, a butter dish, a flower vase, and etc. Adding details such as handles, knobs, and spouts will also be discussed. The goal of this demonstration is to demystify using templates and pattern to build thoughtful, useful pottery. Held at Stifel Fine Arts Center Ballroom.

Steampunk Domed Resin Ring Workshop
Discover Steampunk, an art form inspired by 19th- century industrial steam-powered machinery that incorporates machine parts like gears and cogs to create fantasy 3D pieces. In this Resin Ring workshop, we’ll make a 12mm round mini collage of tiny assorted antique watch parts and preserve it forever under a clear glass-like resin. After the resin has cured for 24 hours, you can stop by the Stifel Center at your convenience to pick up your ring.

Painting Light: Luminescence
Join Katie for part one of the Painting Light Workshop Series, Painting Light: Luminescence! Winter is a great time to look at the lights in wonder as stars, snow, and lights sparkle.
