Count birds and make a difference! Join the Brooks Bird Club, naturalists and other Wheeling residents December 14 for the annual Christmas Bird Count.
This important census provides scientific data on bird populations. Results help guide conservation action. Adults, children, families and nature enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Everyone’s contribution is important.
Meet at the Schrader Center in Oglebay beginning at 8am and pickup tally sheet before heading into the Oglebay woods. You can also drive to locations within a 7.5 mile radius of the park. Record and tally as many different species as possible. Count for as little or as long as you like. If you have skills in bird identification, that’s great. If you don’t, you can still participate. Experienced birders help guide you.
Wear warm, comfortable clothing and shoes. Binoculars and field guides provided or bring your own.
Pre-registration required. Call 304-242-6855 or email Molly Check.
Can’t make it on the 14th, but have bird feeders at home? Contact us at 304-242-6855 or via email to learn more about becoming a feeder watcher.
More about the Christmas Bird Count:
The Christmas Bird Count is nation’s longest-running annual wildlife census. Each year tens of thousands of volunteers brave the weather to take part in this effort to assess the health of bird populations. Data collected is then submitted to Audubon and other organizations to help guide conservation action. Learn more here.
