About Dennis Jones

Dennis Jones was born and raised in Weirton, WV, and is a retired electrical engineer from American Electric Power, where he worked for 33 years. Since retirement, he strives to capture the beauty of nature, focusing on scenes in our local Ohio Valley area. He has an eye for colorful morning sunrises, the mysteries of the moon, and spectacular thunderbolts, all captured in our local area. He also enjoys practicing wildlife photography, including many scenes of the eagles and reflections at the Backwaters of Tomlinson Run in New Cumberland, West Virginia.

His works can be viewed in Weirton Medical Center’s atrium, at Top of West Virginia’s Summit Art Gallery, at Mary H. Weir Public Library, on Facebook, and in many other galleries throughout the Tristate area. Dennis is a member of the Pittsburgh Society of Artists and was juried in as a Tamarack Artisan in 2023.
He often creates collaborative pieces with Savannah Schroll Guz under the name VanDenStar Studio.

Joint Artist Statement

In all his photographs, Dennis Jones strives to capture the idea of Nature vs. Man. For this reason, his works consistently include something man-made, as it complements or clashes with nature. With every picture of the moon, of every lightning bolt, of every sunrise, Dennis also depicts its relationship to man. Darkness always sparks one’s imagination and allows for dramatic lighting, shadows, and vivid colors.

In her works, Savannah Schroll Guz is equally interested in darkness and its ability to stimulate the imagination, especially as it relates to folklore, myth, and the spirit world. Savannah explores stories and legends that take place beneath the moon, and in her assemblages, she creates little tributes to the expansiveness of time.
