Events at this location

“Presence: An Exploration of Aging Through Art” examines the universal, yet intensely personal, experience of growing old.

Through painting, photography, sculpture, written word and mixed media, artists from throughout the United States explore a broad range of perspectives–from thriving lifestyles to the harsher realities of aging. “Presence” provides insight into the physical and mental aging process, challenges us to rethink how we perceive age, highlights the therapeutic benefits of the creative process and examines the role of elders in our society.

A series of learning and community-building events take place in conjunction with the art exhibition. Programs explore the various facets of aging and how art can play a role in that experience. 

A free opening reception with the artists takes place 6:30-8:30pm Thursday, March 5. The exhibit is on display through April 25 at the Stifel Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.

An Evening of Wine AND Beer! Oglebay Institute has combined its Art of Wine series and its Art and Ale craft beer series into one special event.

Enjoy the best of both worlds Friday, April 10 at the Stifel Fine Arts Center! The event begins at 6:30pm.

A buffet of foods from Ye Olde Alpha will be served. Guests will also enjoy live music and can browse the current art exhibition on display.

Oglebay Institute’s wine & beer tasting events are must-attend social gatherings in the Wheeling area. During the events, you can also view the art exhibit on display in the gallery and explore the elegant mansion. During warm weather, stroll through the sculpture gardens. You can purchase your favorite wines & brews to take home, too. Most of all, unwind and have fun. Although events begin at 6:30 p.m., you can arrive early to meet the friendly staff.  And, at some events, guided tours of the art exhibit are offered at 6 p.m.

Beth Bienvenu of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) leads a discussion on Creative Aging Thursday, April 16 at the Stifel Fine Arts Center.

Creative Aging is the practice of engaging older adults in participatory arts programs to benefit individuals and the community at large. Bienvenu serves as the accessibility director for the NEA, where she manages the NEA’s technical assistance and advocacy work devoted to making the arts accessible for people with disabilities, older adults, veterans, and people in institutional settings. She provides guidance and support to state arts agency staff and professionals working the fields of arts access, creativity and aging, arts and health, universal design, and arts in corrections. The Art of Wine series features wine and food pairings in the elegant, yet intimate, splendor of one of Wheeling’s grand properties. The 100-year-old Edemar Mansion (now known as the Stifel Fine Arts Center) is the former home of one of Wheeling’s most prominent families and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

During warm weather, stroll through the gardens. You can purchase your favorite vintages, too. Most of all, unwind and have fun. Jazz at the Stifel presents The Bob Thompson Trio 8pm Saturday, May 30, 2020. (Rescheduled from March 14.)

For nearly 30 years, Bob Thompson has been pianist and regularly featured artist on West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s nationally syndicated program, “Mountain Stage.” For more than 20 years he also has been co-producer and host of “Joy to the World,” a holiday jazz show, broadcast on public radio stations nationwide and heard internationally on The Voice Of America. In October 2015, Bob Thompson was inducted into The West Virginia Music Hall Of Fame.

Bob makes his home In Charleston, West Virginia and has enjoyed a long and active career as a performer, composer, arranger and educator. For decades he has played at festivals and venues around the country and has also taken his music to Europe, Africa and South America.
