Artist in Residence Announcement

We are excited to welcome Casey Miller as a new Artist in Residence at the Stifel Fine Arts Center!

Miller’s work explores the deep connections between the human body—particularly the feminine form—and the natural world. Drawing inspiration from seeds, pods, and organic vessels, their practice reflects cycles of growth, transformation, and renewal, blurring boundaries between landscape and self. Through large-scale botanical forms and immersive color, Miller invites viewers into spaces where internal and external worlds converge, creating works that are both intimate and expansive.

During the residency, Casey will continue developing this evocative body of work while engaging with the Stifel Fine Arts Center community through creative exploration and dialogue.

📍 She will host several exciting workshops!

Soak, Stain & Carve! (carved paintings on birch panel)-

May 20th, 4:30-7 pm

Limit-10

2.5-hour workshop, $50 (non-members)/$45 (OI Members)

  • In this workshop, participants may bring their own reference photos, create an abstract painting, or work from images provided. This class is geared toward intermediate to experienced painters looking to broaden their horizons and explore a surface they may not be used to. We will focus not only on what we are painting, but also on what we are painting on, helping participants become familiar with working on wood and discover its unique potential.
  • Together, we will discuss how to approach this support and highlight its expressive qualities. Using either watercolor or acrylic, we will stain the surface and build layers through thinned applications. Participants will experiment with mark-making and intentionally expose the wood grain as part of the composition.
  • Each participant will receive a clear-gessoed 12×16 birch panel. Paints and carving tools will be provided; however, participants are encouraged to bring their own paints, brushes, or carving tools if preferred. The first half of the class will focus on painting and staining, while the second half will introduce carving techniques.
  • This class is ideal for those who want to expand their practice, explore the possibilities of working on wood panel, and incorporate elements of relief printmaking into their paintings.

Optional: Participants can bring: Personal brushes (for acrylic & watercolor), Palette knife, personal set of watercolors, acrylics, pastels, reference photo of desired subject matter, personal set of relief carving tools, personal set of graphite pencils 2H-6H
