Griffin Nordstrom – Artist in Residence
Griffin Nordstrom is a fiber artist and quiltmaker whose work explores reuse, placemaking, and reinterpretations of history through a contemporary Appalachian lens. Coming from a family quilting tradition spanning over 150 years, Nordstrom’s practice is largely self-taught and informed by extensive material experimentation with secondhand and reclaimed textiles. Their quilts are imbued with lived narratives, addressing themes of environmental advocacy, queerness, and community identity while positioning quilting as both a utilitarian object and a powerful storytelling device.
In addition to quilt making, Nordstrom is an experienced printmaker with formal training in relief, intaglio, and screen-printing from West Virginia University. Nordstrom’s current practice expands traditional quilt forms into soft sculpture and wearable fiber works, blending patchwork, collage, and printmaking techniques to challenge expectations of domestic craft. As a trained historian and interpreter, Nordstrom approaches textile work as part of a generational continuum, using familiar materials to engage audiences in conversations around care, sustainability, and social change.
