Aqueous 2021, the national juried exhibition of the West Virginia Watercolor Society (WVWS), opens Thursday, July 15 at the Stifel Fine Arts Center. A free reception takes place 6:30-8:30pm. Awards will be announced at 7pm.
The exhibit features 44 works by 37 artists in a wide range of subjects and styles. Paintings are created with water-based media – including transparent watercolors, gouache, acrylics and more – executed in an aqueous manner on paper or board.
The juror for this year’s exhibition is Bill Vrscak, an award-winning freelance artist/illustrator and signature member of the American Watercolor Society.
Aqueous 2021 is on display through September 4. Regular gallery hours are 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday and 10am-4pm, Saturday. Admission is free.

The WVWS was founded in 1984. The society seeks to promote and ensure high standards of the art of watercolor painting in West Virginia, to guide students and aspiring watercolor artists, and to educate the public on the broad scope of watercolor and watermedia painting. A vibrant public space accessible to everyone, the Stifel Fine Arts Center showcases the work of established and emerging artists. Year-round, changing exhibits encourage enjoyment and appreciation of visual art through direct engagement with original works in traditional and non-traditional mediums.
Exhibits provide a platform for critical thinking, stimulate learning about art and the creative process and challenge viewers to expand the definition of art and reflect on the role of art in society.
Exhibits are free and open to the public to tour.
